“Active Video Games May Be A Good Supplement To Outdoor Play For Kids”

I haven’t posted in a very long time. Circumstances beyond my control… Anyway…

I ran across an article in Medical Daily that summarizes a study from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Since I believe that, the long term physical health ramifications of hours of sedentary video game playing by young children may well leave all of us sorry in years to come, I thought I would pass this on to you.

Keep reading to discover an excerpt from the article by Anthony Rivas (http://www.medicaldaily.com/reporters/anthony-rivas).

“Active Video Games May Be A Good Supplement To Outdoor Play For Kids”

“For a long time now, scientists have warned parents about letting their kids play video games during their free time…”

“…a new study suggests all that movement may be just as effective as playing outdoors.”

“The study comes from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where researchers were interested in comparing the effects of playing motion-based video games to so-called “unstructured outdoor play” — playing in a playground, for example — among children aged 5 to 8.”

“The researchers hooked up 16 normal-weight children to accelerometers on their hips and both wrists,…”

“Outdoor play took place in a fully-equipped playground…” “kids could engage in whichever activities they wanted.”

“When they went inside to play video games, they were given an Xbox 360 Kinect with the game “Kinect Adventures: River Rush.” The game requires jumping and side-stepping to maneuver an inflatable raft through river courses.”

“The researchers measured levels of physical activity with the Children’s Activity Rating Scale,” (Link to Children’s Activity Rating Scale = http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2091164)

“According to national physical activity guidelines, children and adolescents should be getting 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day, in addition to muscle strengthening activities at least three days a week.” (National Physical Activity Guidlelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention= http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/children/index.htm)

Lawn Pesticides and Children’s Health

Are you concerned about Lawn Pesticides and Children’s Health?

Lawn Pesticides and Children's HealthHere is the opinion of Joyce Acebo-Raguskus, who is “Chair Diesel Cleanup, Environmental Concerns Coalition, Clean Water Action/ Advocate/ Coalition for a Safe & Healthy Connecticut.” Her opinion, which seems to be in conjunction with the professional opinion of others, was published in the Milford-Orange Bulletin online out of New Haven, Connecticut.

If you haven’t heard about the dangers of lawn pesticides, then be prepared to be frightened. I have included the direct link to the piece at the bottom of the excerpt. I have also included some other links that may be helpful to you.

“People and parents that care can make a difference”

“Come Fall, as in our Springs, the yellow warning flags will fly on some lawns to alert people that poison has been applied. First, let us not assume safety here! Registration of pesticides with the Environmental Protection Agency, does not mean they are safe …”

“The Environmental Protection does not test pesticides, and no turf pesticides have ever been tested for their health effects on children.”

“Today the expectant mother’s “umbilical cord contains over 270+ toxic chemicals, to include pesticides!”

“Of 30 commonly used lawn pesticides, 19 have studies linking them with cancer, thirteen are linked with birth defects, 21, with reproductive effects, 15 with neurotoxicity or abnormal brain development.”

Second Hand Smoke and Childrens Health

Lancashire Telegraph out of the UK has opened the topic of Second Hand Smoke and Childrens Health. Lawrence Dunhill, a Health reporter presents the concerns of one community regarding children breathing the secondhand smoke from cigarettes in homes and vehicles.

Second Hand Smoke and Children's Health

This is not a pretty habit.

Have you encountered any recent research or valid information on this topic? I firmly believe that secondhand cigarette smoke can be damaging to young developing lungs and body systems. I lack any recent research to put on this site. Will you help out my readers?

Both my parents smoked incessantly in the house and car. I have both asthma and upper respiratory allergies. I forever had colds and coughs, when I was small. For me, this is enough to believe that my lungs may have been irreparably damaged from this exposure. Nevertheless, I want my reader to have more.

“East Lancashire children in peril from parents’ cigarettes”

Second Hand Smoke and Children's Health“The figure was released as health chiefs urged parents to take their cigarettes outside to avoid inflicting secondhand smoke on youngsters.”

“… opening a window or back door was not enough to protect kids.”

“Susan Hopkinson, enhanced services manager at Lancashire County Council said …”

““Children’s lungs are smaller and less developed so they are more vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke.”

““It is vital that we do everything we can to improve awareness and reduce the risks.”

““Opening a window won’t protect your health, but smoke-free cars and homes will.””

Both my readers and I would like to hear your personal stories about the effects of Second Hand Smoke and Childrens Health.

People know so little about a topic that has really been in the news for decades. Those who know, often times ignore the dangers that secondhand smoke poses to children.

Childhood Diabetes and Type 2 Statistics

Do you have concerns about Childhood Diabetes and Type 2 Statistics?

Childhood Diabetes and Type 2 StatisticsDiabetes is a serious disease that effects hundred of thousands of people worldwide. It would seem that in addition to eating habits, genetics, and lifestyle, certain groups of people have an increased risk of this condition. Discover three extra health risks to children from type 2 diabetes by reading the excerpt below and going to the original webpage at Emax Health online. Deborah Mitchell has put together the condensed fact from new research from the University of Texas (UT) pediatricians.

Childhood Diabetes and Type 2 Statistics

Children with Type 2 Diabetes Face 3 Extra Health Risks”

“Type 2 diabetes, once seen primarily among adults, is now developing in a growing number of children. A new study points out that children with type 2 diabetes face 3 extra health risks compared with individuals who acquire the disease as adults, and those risks carry lifetime consequences.”

“However, certain ethnic groups are more likely to develop the disease than others.”

“Now in this latest study, headed by University of Texas (UT) pediatricians, it’s been reported that children with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of developing at least three serious problems faster and at a greater rate than are people who develop type 2 diabetes as adults.”

“Those complications are:” Read More>>>

“The researchers came to this conclusion after analyzing data from 699 children and adolescents.”

“According to Jane Lynch, MD, the study’s principal investigator in the San Antonio arm of the study and a professor of pediatric endocrinology in the School of Medicine at UT Health Science Center, “What’s especially challenging for these children is that many also develop fatty liver, which limits our use of the drugs that control hypertension.””

Just the thought of Childhood Diabetes and Type 2 Statistics is scary. Parents cannot follow the kids around all day, but having been forewarned and forearmed with information, the whole family can eat healthier. The older the child the easier it will be for them to get either the unhealthy foods that they have become accustomed to, or to just eat as they please as part of their process of individuation… and because it tastes good. With the younger children parents have a higher probability of teaching healthful eating habits.

Knowledge is power, if you take action.

Eating habits and activity levels have dropped for our ever increasingly technological society.

Faith Based Healing Deaths

Faith Based Healing Deaths This article from Daily Mail clearly demonstrates how fast news travels. Philadelphia Pensylvania… Two parents are charged with the Faith Based Healing Deaths of both their sons. Apparently, their first son died due to the lack of medical care and now a second son is also dead allegedly from the same cause. They have been charged with murder? No author was credited with this piece; it is noted as being… “By Daily Mail Reporter.”

This is my opinion…

I cannot fathom how any parent can stand by and watch their children die.

__________________________________________________________

Faith Based Healing Deaths

“Faith-healing parents charged with MURDER after second child died in their home from pneumonia without getting medical help while they were on probation over death of first son”

“Autopsy report showed Brandon Schaible died from bacterial pneumonia in April, and his death was ruled a homicide”

“Herbert and Catherine Schaible ignored a court order to seek medical care if their children needed it, prosecutors said Wednesday.”

“The requirement was a condition of the probation sentence they received after the 2009 pneumonia death of their toddler son, Kent, four years prior.”

Read More about this extremely devastating story>>>

_____________________________________________________________

Faith Based Healing Deaths always make the news.

This is another opinion…

What could compel 2, not only 1 parent, but 2 parents to watch their children die. This is the US, so they are presumed innocent until proven guilty. That aside, I believe that God has given us all free will to choose good over evil. And choose we do every day. I am of the personal opinion that each one of us must decide how to worship and how to act upon our beliefs. I also believe in justice and the law. An infant or toddler does not have the ability to choose. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the caregivers, mostly parents, to make all the decisions. Were the parents so afraid of what their church would say that they watched their children die?

I went to the website for the First Century Gospel Church (c) 2013 at http://www.fcgchurch.org/index.html

They list themselves with a post office box number in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19120. If I am understanding the situation, they rent a building for services…

Here is another quote from the article listed above:

“Schaibles belong to fundamentalist Christian church, which teaches that it’s a sin to rely on modern medicine over prayer”

I could not find anything on the site that would indicate such a tenet. The site lists scripture and their beliefs as ‘basic tenets.’ You can look for yourself.

As with any choice we make, they are based in knowledge and belief, knowledge of how something works, and in the belief that it is true.

In the Bible, it clearly says that God changed after the understanding gained through Jesus. This belief has brought me to believe that God does not intentionally crash airplanes, nor does He want His children to die for any reason. He is Hope, and Love only. How can someone believe that God would allow a child to die, due to the belief of the parent, especially when this belief was that God is all powerful. This is all too much for this space.

I felt compelled to add my comments here.

Childhood Obesity and the Breathe of Life

Childhood Obesity and the Breathe of LifeThe world is full of amazing information. A Dr. Holly Phillips talks to the co-hosts of the  “CBS  This Morning” show about Childhood Obesity and the Breathe of Life. “A child’s breath may reveal risk for diseases years before he or she gets sick.”

“Breath from obese children appears to contain different chemical compounds than the breath of non-obese kids, a researcher has discovered. He hopes his study could one day pave the way for a breath test at the pediatrician’s office instead of a painful blood test, he said.”

“Alkhouri and his team asked 60 overweight and obese kids to breathe into a specialized collection bag as if it was a balloon, and then asked 55 lean children to do the same.”

Part of the education I received in order to practice therapy, counseling, and educational activities with parents, families, and teens was learning to read and understand research and statistics. Most Common Mental Health Issues Affecting Children

In today’s modern and fast-paced world, everyday life is enough to create enough pressure to cause mental stress. If adults have a hard time dealing with the rapidity of change in our world, how can children be expected to handle it. If parents are not handling it well, then they will be unable to teach stress management, or resilience to children.

This does not even include mental health disorders that tend to be hereditary, passing from one generation to the next, even skipping a generation.

Most Common Mental Health Issues Affecting Children The Examiner online page has a list of the Most Common Mental Health Issues Affecting Children.

Marina Lumsden talks about a Fox News article and elaborates on the topic. You can find this list below and should you want a short description of each mental health disorder affecting children, then just click the link.

Health of Public Pools for Children

You may want to find out how your local public pool keeps you and your children safe. According to the Fox News website, there is “poop in public pools.” If you didn’t already know that public pools are historically subject to various serious contamination, this is your heads-up. (Psst… That’s why pools are disinfected with chlorine.)

Symptoms of Emotionally Abusive Parenting

Symptoms of Emotionally Abusive ParentingHave you ever taken a look at all the topics on the website eHow? It is often a great resource for brief information. It can give you a start to get more in-depth information.

Angela Neal, an eHow Contributor, has written a straight to the point piece outlining four points that may indicate Symptoms of Emotionally Abusive Parenting.

There is a reality to emotionally abusive parenting styles. Children struggle to grow up healthy in this type of environment. Emotional abuse is not limited to parents. Educators and many other professionals are guilty of these offenses.

Learn more. Be proactive.

Symptoms of Emotionally Abusive Parenting

“Signs of Emotionally Abusive Parents”

Here are four signs that are easy to spot…

“Detachment”

”A sign of emotionally abusive parents is emotional detachment between the parents and child.”

“… the relationship will seem cold or artificial when they are around others.”

”Inappropriate Age Behavior”

“If a child acts much older than his or her age, or much younger, this is one of the signs of possible parental emotional maltreatment.”

Beware. Do not attempt to diagnose the children of other people. These brief descriptions here and elsewhere are for informational purposes only. Seek the help of a local professional, or your local school district, if you have a concern.

“The child may also act sexually promiscuous at a young age to try to gain some kind of approval.”

“… if a child of eight or nine displays the behavior of a toddler or a baby, such as rocking back and forth or thumb-sucking, they also may be seeking the attention they didn’t receive at that age.”

“Withdrawn”

“An emotionally abused child may retreat inside a shell and become shy and even fearful of other people.”

“It’s possible that a child who is excessively afraid of doing something wrong, or is a afraid of saying something …”

“Blame and Belittling”

“If a parent blatantly or subtly refers to the child as a burden or blames him or her of causing all the problems in the parents’ lives …”

“… because he or she isn’t good enough in school or other activities.”

Name-calling is also another severe source of stress from parent to child…

Symptoms of Emotionally Abusive ParentingPlease do not use this brief undifferentiated list of signs and Symptoms of Emotionally Abusive Parenting styles to panic over the parenting skills of other people. It may give you some food for thought, and help you to review your own parenting style. Parents often do and say things unconsciously and inadvertently, not understanding that harm is occurring.

If you have deep concerns about a child or children that you have observed, please take action by seeking the guidance of a local psychology professional, or the professional at your local school. If you still have concerns, please follow the guidance you receive from those professionals for your state or local law enforcement district.

May it never happen again….
